UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's tennis capped off a successful day two at ITA Regionals, highlighted by 15 combined singles and doubles wins. The singles round of 32 will start Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. along with double quarterfinals.
Singles
Matt Galush (Cary, N.C.) started off his day, defeating Michael Chen of Georgetown in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Galush will go against Jared Isaacs of Duquesne tomorrow.
Constant De La Bassetiere (Reim, France) received a bye during the first round of the main draw and will play Josh Wilson of Liberty University tomorrow.
Gabriel Nemeth (Brasilia, Brazil) defeated Justin Herrera of Old Dominion University easily 6-3, 6-1. Nemeth will play Gonzalo Adis of James Madison University tomorrow.
Christos Antonopoulos (Athens, Greece) defeated Luca Maldoner of Old Dominion University in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Antonopoulos will face off against Damon Roberts of James Madison University tomorrow.
Zach Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa) earned a dominant win over John Walsh of the University of Richmond 6-2, 6-0. He will play Alex Ribeiro of Virginia Tech tomorrow.
Alp Sentay (Izmar, Turkey) lost a hard fought battle to Virginia Tech's Henrik Korsgaard 6-4, 7-5.
Ben Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa) defeated Parth Sharma of Mount St. Mary's 6-1, 3-0, before he retired. B. Lieb will go against Benjamin Barnett of George Washington University tomorrow.
Doubles
The duo of Z. Lieb/Sutter earned a dominant win over George Washington University's Dennis Afanasev and Will Peden, 8-1. The pair went on to play Jannik Giesse and Luca Maldoner of Old Dominion University who they also defeated, 8-3. Z. Lieb/Sutter lost to Nicaise Muamba and Josh Wilson of Liberty University in the round of 16.
Sentay/Antonopoulos suffered a tough loss in the first round of the doubles main draw to Edward Ayers and Jakob Nielsen of George Mason, 8-6.
Galush/B. Lieb defeated George Washington University's Zicheng Zeng and Ben Barnett to start their day together, 8-5. The pair then went on to get a win against Greg Durham and Peter Lohrbach of Navy, 8-5. Galush/B. Lieb ended their day by earning a win over another one of Navy's doubles pairings, Andrew Ton and Derrick Thompson, 8-2. Galush/B. Lieb will play in the quarterfinals tomorrow against Ryan Goetz and Gianni Ross of the University of Virginia.
De La Bassetiere/Nemeth faced Lawrence Sciglitano and Jakub Behun of George Washington University to start their day and found success early, winning 8-7(8). The duo went on to face Rohan Kamdar and Connor Lee of Georgetown, winning 8-5. To finish their first day, De La Bassetiere/Nemeth became the second doubles pairing to earn a spot in the quarterfinals, defeating Ammar Alhogbani and Matthew Lord of the University of Virginia, 8-4. De La Bassetiere/Nemeth will play against William and Mary's Brenden Volk and Oren Vasser.
"We had a bunch of wins in singles and doubles and we need to carry that through tomorrow," head coach Jeff Zinn said. "We have two singles and one doubles per player tomorrow and hopefully our conditioning this past month will get us through."
"We had a strong beginning considering this is the first tournament some of the guys have played in this season," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "The slow courts and optimal weather have certainly been a plus. Competition will become tougher Saturday and Sunday and the guys have to get ready for some battles."
