Kalonji takes first in epee during Day one of Temple Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's fencing team opened up action at the Temple Open for the Nittany Lions. Head coach Wes Glon's team was outstanding in each event during day one.

The women's foil team started the tournament with three fencers placing within the top eight. Finishing in eighth was Isabella Zuzulo (Newtown, Pa.), one spot behind teammate Clark (Maplewood, N.J.), who took seventh. Leading the group was sophomore Lodovica Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) with her second-place finish.

Leading the women's epee team was Anastasia Kalonji (Rennes,France) taking first as Penn State's first champion of the Temple Open. Nicolette Vigna (Thornwood, N.Y.) followed with an impressive fifth place finish. Teammates Alexandra Gillis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Hailey Hahn (Bernardsville, N.J.) placed 15th and 27th, respectively. Women's saber was the final event of the day for the Nittany Lions. Sophomores Sara Cunningham (Decatur, Ga.) and Carlee Beaty (State College, Pa.) capped off the day by finishing 17th and 30th.
