UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- In the final day of the 46th annual Penn State Garret Open, the Penn State men's fencing team was successful as they had two champions on the day and finished no worse than third in every event.
Penn State had a strong start to the day in the foil crowning its first champion of the weekend. Sebastian Tirado (Dorado, Puerto Rico) placed first after defeating Notre Dame's Robert Wong, 15 to 10, in the championship. Sophomore Shane Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) also had a top-ten finish, placing seventh on the day with teammate Maximillian Lewicki (Hillsborough, N.J.) also strong, finishing 11th.
Freshmen Ryan Griffiths (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Devin Tafoya (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) both finished within the top ten in epee after coming into the direct elimination rounds tied for the number one seed. Griffiths fell in the semi-finals to Notre Dame's Aiden Antekeier, 15 to 12, to place third while Tafoya placed ninth.
Closing out this year's Garret Open was the men's saber. Head coach Wes Glon's saber squad had both finalists in the championship round guaranteeing them their second title of the weekend. Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.) was crowned for the second year straight after defeating teammate Inti Farfan-Bayerl (Morrison, Colo.), 15 to 5, in the championship. Senior Marcel Dolegiewicz (Park Ridge, Ill.) also added a top ten finish of his own placing ninth.
