UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Nittany Lion fencing teams won 12 of 13 duals in their final home dual meet of the season against Penn, Duke, Yale, Columbia, Haverford, UNC and Temple (women's).
Penn State started its day with a pair of wins against Yale with the men's team winning 17-10 and the women winning 20-7. Both squads were supported by strong performances from their saber fencers, who lost only three combined bouts.
In round two, the Nittany Lions added two more wins to their day with the women's team narrowly beating Columbia, 14-13, and the men's team winning 15-12.
The men continued their win streak in the third round with a 15-12 victory over Duke while the women fell to the Blue Devils, 14-13, despite a 3-0 shutout performance by Lodovica Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) and another impressive showing from the women's saber squad. The women's team bounced back against Penn winning 17-10 with Bicego, Karen Chang (Hong Kong, China) and Zara Moss (Cranberry Township, Pa.) posting shutout performances. Seniors Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.) and Marcel Dolegiewicz (Park Ridge, Ill.) were perfect against Penn and helped the men win 14-13.
Penn State picked up two more wins against North Carolina. The women beat UNC, 18-9, and the men's foil squad was a perfect 9-0 against the Tar Heels in the men's 21-6 victory.
In the sixth round of duals the women picked up their fifth win of the day after defeating Temple 19-8.
The Nittany Lions closed out the day with two wins against Haverford. The men's fencing team lost just one bout against Haverford winning 26-1 and the women's team won 22-5 with a perfect 9-0 performance in saber.
