UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's gymnastics junior Sam Zakutney was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week after his dominating performance at the West Point Open.
Zakutney was superb all weekend for the Nittany Lions as the junior won the all-around title (81.00) on Friday night, taking the top spot in the preliminary rounds in floor (prelim score: 14.450), high bar (prelim score: 13.700), and parallel bars (prelim score: 13.950) and qualifying for the finals in all three of those events.
On Saturday in the finals, not only did the junior win all three events again, he improved upon his score in all three, winning the floor title with a 14.550 routine, winning high bar with an improved 13.800, and elevating his performance on the p-bars to a 14.000.
This marks Zakutney's second career Big Ten Gymnast of the week honor after he earned his first almost a year ago to the day on Jan. 16, 2018.
Zakutney and the Penn State men's gymnastics team return to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army in a dual on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
