UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Junior Sam Zakutney was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week after claiming three first place finishes and a second-place finish in his four events of competition against Nebraska last weekend.
In his four events of competition over the weekend, junior Sam Zakutney took home first place in three and second in the fourth. He was named the Gene Wettstone Gymnast of the Meet for his performance.
Zakutney won the floor, the parallel bars and the high bar. On the vault, Zakutney took second to Nebraska's Anton Stephenson, the reigning Vault National Champion.
On the floor, Zakutney scored a 14.250, on vault he scored a season-high 14.400, on parallel bars he added a 13.750, and he wrapped up the meet with a career-best performance on high bar with a 14.700, crushing his previous career high of 14.450.
Zakutney shared the gymnast of the Week honors with Michigan's Cameron Bock.
This marks the third weekly honor of Zakutney's career, and the first time he has received two honors in the same season.
Zakutney and the rest of the Nittany Lions will return to action on February 10 at 2 p.m. as they head to the University of Illinois-Chicago to take on both the Flames and Springfield in a tri-meet in Chicago.
