ROSEMONT, Ill. – Penn State track & field's Danae Rivers and Morgan Shigo were both named Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.
Rivers earns Big Ten Indoor Women's Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time in her career after breaking her own school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.94 at the Penn State National Open. The time is currently the top time in the conference and in the nation.
At the National Open she also anchored the winning women's distance medley team that ran a time of 11:09.85, the third fastest time in school history and the top time in the conference so far.
Rivers now holds the school records in the 800-meter and 1,000-meter runs.
Shigo set a personal-best mark of 73-2 (22.30m) in the men's weight throw at the Penn State National Open for the No. 2 mark in the school record books. The distance is currently the second-best mark in the Big Ten and the fifth-best mark in the nation.
The honor marks the first Big Ten weekly award of Shigo's career.
Rivers, Shigo and the Nittany Lions remain in University Park for the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Multi-Sport Facility & Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. Action gets underway at 11 a.m.
