Women’s Fencing Team Perfect at North Carolina

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's fencing team wrapped up the weekend in Durham, N.C., in style. Led by Head Coach Wes Glon, the women were able to continue the success of the weekend by winning all five match-ups against Northwestern, North Carolina, Boston College, Air Force and Duke.

The women's foil and saber squads lost only three combined bouts in the Nittany Lions 20-7 win over Boston College. Freshman epee fencer Hailey Hahn (Berdnardsville, N.J.) and senior foil fencer Najiyyah Clark (Maplewood, N.J.) both posted 3-0 shutout performances against the Eagles. In the second round, sophomore Lodovica Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) clinched a 14-13 win over Duke for Penn State with her 5-4 victory in the final bout of the series.

Leading the Nittany Lions to a 17-10 win over Air Force was the epee squad. With only one loss in the third round the women's epee squad was led by Nicolette Vigna (Thornwood, N.Y.) and Alissa Hofmann (Cambridge, Mass.), who both had 3-0 performances against the Falcons. Anastasia Kalonji (Rennes, France), Isabella Zuzulo (Newtown, Pa.) and Kelli Wozniak (Westerville, Ohio) led the team to a 17-10 victory over North Carolina with their shutout performances.

The Nittany Lions closed out the dual meet, and remained perfect on the day, by beating Northwestern, 14-13.

Penn State will next be in action when select members of the Penn State fencing teams will travel to Denver, Colo. for the Junior Olympics, which is a four-day event starting Friday, Feb. 15 and ends Monday, Feb. 18.
