Penn State Fencing Team Nearly Perfect in Final Dual Series

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State fencing teams dominated in the final dual meet series of the regular season in Philadelphia, Pa. today with head coach Wes Glon's teams losing only one dual combined. The Nittany Lions fenced Princeton, St. John's and Johns Hopkins. Additionally, the Penn State women's fencing team fenced Temple and the men fenced Stevens.

The women's fencing team was perfect on the day after beating Temple, 16-11; Princeton, 14-13; Johns Hopkins, 20-7; and St. John's, 14-13. 

The men's fencing team won three of four duals. The Nittany Lions beat Stevens, 23-4; Johns Hopkins, 21-6; and St. John's, 15-12. Their only loss on the day was against Princeton, 14-13.

In the first round, the men's saber and foil squads posted a perfect 9-0 performance in their 23-4 win over Stevens. Shane Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.), Felipe Rosario (Maplewood, N.J.), Eduardo Lara (Queretaro, Mexico), Inti Farfan-Bayerl (Morrison, Colo.) and Gavin Turner (Rehoboth, Mass.) all posted 3-0 performances against the Ducks. Jade Rowland (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and Nicolette Vigna (Thornwood, N.Y.) led the women in their 16-11 win over Temple with their 3-0 performances.

Penn State split against Princeton as the women beat the Tigers while the men received their only loss of the day, both being determined by a single bout. The women's fencing team won, 14-13, and the men narrowly fell to Princeton, 14-13.

Lara and Rosario posted their second consecutive 3-0 performance of the night in the men's 21-6 win over Johns Hopkins. Vigna, Hailey Hahn (Berdnardsville, N.J.) and Alissa Hofmann (Cambridge, Mass.) combined for nine wins and zero losses in the women's 20-7 win against the Blue Jays.

The women remain undefeated on the day after besting St. John's, 14-13, while the men finish the day with three wins after their 15-12 win over St. John's.
