UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Alexis Holmes has been named the 2019 Big Ten Women's Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year announced Tuesday by the Big Ten Conference.
Holmes is the latest Nittany Lion to earn Freshman of the Year accolades. Danae Rivers was named Freshman of the Year in 2017, giving Penn State two of the last three Freshman of the Year awards in the conference.
Holmes adds her Freshman of the Year award to a list of achievements during her first indoor season for the Nittany Lions.
The Hamden, Connecticut native earned All-American recognition for her fourth-place finish (top finish among freshman) in the 400-meter dash at the 2019 NCAA Track & Field Indoor Championships. Holmes set the school record in the 400-meter dash (52.14 sec) en route to winning the Big Ten championship in the 400m.
Holmes is the fourth Nittany Lion to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year, joining Danae Rivers (2017), Shavon Greaves (2008), and Donna Fiddler (1996).
Holmes helped the Nittany Lions women's track and field program finish 11th in the country with her fourth-place performance in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Track & Field Indoor Championships.
