UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa – The Penn State men's golf team travels to Reynolds Lake Oconee for the annual Linger Longer Invitational Friday-Sunday, March 15-17. The 54-hole tournament is played on the Landing Course at Lake Reynolds Oconee, with a par-72, 6,991-yard layout.
Penn State will tee off at 8:30 a.m. for the first round of play on Friday. The Nittany Lion roster for the Linger Longer Invitational remains the same with juniors Alex Bard and Ryan Davis and seniors Ryan Dornes, JD Hughes and Charles Huntzinger representing Penn State. Sophomore James McHugh will compete as an individual.
The 2019 tournament field includes the 2018 Linger Longer Invitational champion Alabama, Augusta, Charlotte, 2018 runner-up Georgia, host Kennesaw State, Liberty, Louisville, Mercer, Ohio State, South Alabama, Tennessee, Toledo, UNCG and Virginia. The Nittany Lions finished third at this event last spring. Seven teams from the 2018 field advanced to the NCAA Regionals.
The Nittany Lions came out strong in the 2018 event with a 278 team score in the first round, framed by a 7-under 65 by Cole Miller and 4-under 68 by Hughes. Back-to-back rounds with a 10-over 289 landed Penn State in third place. Alabama (-24) won the championship on the final day after Georgia (-22) held the top spot following the first- and second-round.
The low round on final day for Penn State was carded by junior JD Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) who bounced back after bogeying two of his first three holes to shoot 2-under 70, including an eagle on the par-four 11th.
Bard carded a 2-under 70 and Huntzinger a72 in the second round to keep Penn State in third while Hughes rebounded with a 70 on day three to keep the Nittany Lions five strokes ahead of the fourth-place team. Miller and Huntzinger posted top-20 individual finishes with Miller tying for sixth overall and Huntzinger tying for 17th.
