GREENSBORO, Ga. – Senior JD Hughes birdied six of his first nine holes and had nine on the day to move to the top of the leaderboard following second-round play on day two of the Linger Longer Invitational Saturday. Hughes' career low 65 tied Virginia's David Morgan and Louisville's Jiri Zuska for the low round for this year's tournament.
Penn State's 285 Saturday helped the Nittany Lions improve to sixth on the team leaderboard.
No. 24 Alabama vaulted six spots to take the lead after day two with a 12-under 564. Three ranked teams, 15th-ranked Georgia, No. 21 Liberty and No. 25 Louisville sit in three-way tie for second place.
Hughes' 137 (72-65) ties him with Alabama's Josh Sedeno and Liberty's Alexandre Fuchs for the top spot.
With three birdies in his first six holes, senior Charles Huntzinger kept close to even the rest of the way and turned in a 1-under 71. Alec Bard recovered from three back nine bogeys and birdied his final hole for a 3-over 75. Bard (70-75) and Huntzinger (74-71) are tied for 25th with a 145 two-round total.
Senior Ryan Dornes moved to 38th with a 2-over 74 Saturday (73-74) at 147 after the second round. Junior Ryan Davis is at 154 (77-77) in a tie for 72nd.
Sunday's final round concludes the three-round, three-day tournament with Penn State teeing off on hole No. 1 at 9:15 a.m. ET on The Landing Golf Course.
