UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 8 Penn State women's lacrosse team fell 13-8 at No. 13 Loyola on Saturday. The Nittany Lions tallied five goals in the second half and got within two goals with 19 minutes left, but the Greyhounds closed out the game with three tallies. Penn State is now 3-2 overall, while Loyola improved to 2-2.
Senior Kayla Brisolari led the Nittany Lions with a career-high four goals. She tied her career-best for points. Junior Maria Auth matched a season-high with two goals and added an assist. Senior Madison Carter and junior Quinn Nicolai each contributed a goal. Brisolari won four draws, while junior Hayley DeAgostine picked up four ground balls. Freshman Taylor Suplee tied a season-high with 11 saves.
With her goal today, Carter moved into sole possession of seventh all-time on Penn State's career points list. Her 217th career point broke a tie with Laurie Gray (1981-84). She is now 10 points behind former teammate Katie O'Donnell (2015-18) for sixth place.
Hannah Powers led the Greyhounds with six points, including four goals, while Lizy Rosenzweig had three goals and two assists. Taylor VanThof contributed two goals and six draws. Sam Fielder added a goal and an assist. Kady Glynn made 12 stops in goal.
The Nittany Lions trailed 7-3 at halftime. Brisolari scored all three goals for Penn State, including one free-position tally. Brisolari also won three draw controls. She had three goals on four shots, while Auth attempted three shots. Suplee made seven saves.
The Greyhounds opened the game with a 2-0 advantage. VanThof found the net with 29:16 left in the half before Powers scored with 26:38 remaining in the period.
Brisolari cut the deficit in half with 22 minutes left, finding the net for the fifth time this season. However, Loyola answered with a tally by Emily Cooper three minutes later. Loyola extended its lead to 4-1 with 11:18 remaining on a goal by Rosenzweig.
The PSU senior answered with a pair of goals. Brisolari scored with 9:09 left in the half and added another on a free-position attempt just 21 seconds later to cut the Loyola lead to 4-3.
However, Loyola ended the half on a 3-0 run with goals by Rosenzweig, Powers and Elli Kluegel.
The Nittany Lions tallied the first two scores of the second half. Auth registered her first goal of the day with 27:22 left before Brisolari scored just 1:32 later.
A goal by Loyola's Jillian Wilson was answered by a tally from Auth. PSU trailed 8-6 with 24:53 left in the contest.
The squads traded goals for the next five minutes. A goal by Loyola's Powers was answered by Carter scoring a man-up goal off a feed from Auth. Powers got on the board again before a free-position goal by PSU's Quinn Nicolai. Loyola led 10-8 with 19:07 remaining in the game.
VanThof found the net for the Greyhounds with 12:02 remaining and Fiedler added a man-up goal with 7:23 to go. Rosenzweig added a goal with 44 seconds left.
The Nittany Lions return to Panzer Stadium on Wednesday, March 6 against No. 6 James Madison. The game is set to start at 2 p.m.
