UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State Nittany Lion men's fencing team finished day one of the NCAA Championships today. The event is being hosted at Cleveland State's Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Day one started with the men's epee. Representing Penn State were senior Anton Piskovatskov (Houston, Texas) and Ryan Griffiths (Fair Lawn, N.J.).
Piskovatskov finished day one in fourth place with a10-5 record while out touching his opponents 53 to 45. Griffiths sits in 12th place after the first 15 bouts with a 8-7 record.
The next event on the day was men's foil. Competing for Penn State sophomore Sebastiano Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) and Mohamed Hassan (Saint Louis, Mo.).
Bicego went 11-4 throughout the first three rounds of men's foil event, which places him in sixth place just two bouts behind fourth place. Hassan is 6-9, which places him 15th at the end of day one.
Men's saber closed out the first day. Representing Penn State were seniors Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.) and Marcel Dolegiewicz (Park Ridge, Ill.).
Metryka currently holds first place in the men's saber event with a lead of two bouts with a near perfect record of 14-1 through three rounds. Dolegiewicz currently sits in 12th in a very open saber tournament with a record of 7-8 on the day.
The 2019 NCAA Fencing Championships continue at the Wolstein Center tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. The men's competition will continue, culminating in the crowning of three individual champions (one in each weapon) later in the day.
