Women’s Saber Successful on Day 3 of NCAAs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State women's fencing team completed day three of the NCAA Championships at Cleveland State's Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
 

Through three days of competition, Penn State is in second place with 139 points. Columbia currently holds first place with 143 total points.
 

The women's competition started with women's epee. Representing Penn State were Barbara VanBenthuysen (Spring, Texas) and Anastasia Kalonji (Rennes, France). Kalonji currently sits in third with a 10-5 record and has the second most touches of any women epee fencer, 65, while being touched for the third lowest total in the competition, 48, for an indicator of +17. VanBenthuysen currently sits in seventh with a 9-6 record and is just nine touches away from taking fourth place in the tournament.


The next event on the day was women's foil. Isabella Zuzulo (Newtown, Pa.) and Lodovica Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) fenced for the Nittany Lions. Bicego through the first three rounds holds 10th place with an 8-7 record while Zuzulo sits in 16th with a record of 6-9.
 

Women's saber closed out day one of the women's competition. Competing for Penn State were Karen Chang (Hong Kong, China) and Zara Moss (Cranberry Township, Pa.). Chang sits in second place after the first 15 bouts of the competition after going 12-3 with an indicator of +28. Moss currently holds fifth place with a 10-5 record and the third best indicator of the tournament, +25, and was one win away from finishing in the top-four after the first day of women's competition.


The 2019 NCAA Fencing Championships continue at the Wolstein Center tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. The women's competition will continue, culminating in the crowning of three individual champions (one in each weapon) later in the day.
