UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Three Nittany Lions have been named to the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team for the three matches in the 2019 Women's International U-23 La Manga Tournament. Junior midfielder Sam Coffey, and incoming freshman Jordan Canniff and Payton Linnehan have been selected to participate for the USA.
Coffey, a junior transfer, was a first team All-American and ACC Midfielder of the Year last season while playing for Boston College. Coffey scored 12 goals, tallied 14 assists and was named a 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist last season. Coffey has been a member of the US Women's National Team for the U-19, U-19 and U-20 teams.
Incoming freshman Jordan Canniff has previous experience with the U.S. National teams. Canniff has played for the USWNT at both the U-17 and U-19 levels and participated in the 2016 & 2018 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. Canniff was ranked No. 6 overall and the No. 3 midfielder in the 2019 class by TopDrawerSoccer.
Fellow incoming freshman Payton Linnehan will play for the U-23 USWNT. Linnehan played for the U.S. Women's National Team for both the U-15 and U-17 teams. At the 2016 CONCACAF U-15 Championship, Linnehan scored eight goals and earned the Golden Boot award. Linnehan was ranked No. 15 overall and the No. 5 forward in the 2019 class by TopDrawerSoccer.
The U.S. will play Sweden on April 5, France on April 7 and Italy on April 9 in La Manga, Spain.
