Castano Wins Gold at Mexican Nationals; Lulek to Represent Sweden at WUGs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A pair of Penn State men's swimmers stood out abroad earlier this month, as sophomore Gabe Castano (Allentown, Pa.) won a gold and silver medal at Mexican Nationals in Tijuana, and freshman William Lulek (Stockholm, Sweden) qualified for Sweden's World University Games team in Canada.

Castano won gold in the 50-meter freestyle with a Mexican national-record time of 22.20 seconds and silver in the 100-meter freestyle, posting a personal-best time of 49.96 seconds in the prelims. His 50m free time ranks 31st in the world, and his 100m time ranks 78th. He will compete for Mexico at the Pan-Am Games this summer in Lima, Peru, July 26 to August 11.

Lulek competed at the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials and qualified for Sweden's World University Games team with a time of 4:24.02 in the in the 400-meter IM, which ranks 52nd in the world. He will also compete in the 200m IM and 200m breaststroke at the games, which will take place in Napoli, Italy, July 3-14.
