BOSTON, Mass. – Recent graduates Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) and Chris Funkey (Orland Park, Ill.) were each honored by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) as Krampade Division I All-American Scholars in the third year of the award's existence as announced on Tuesday morning.
The AHCA recognizes student-athletes who achieved at least a 3.6 GPA during both the fall and spring semesters and played in at least 40 percent of team competitions during the 2018-19 season. Both Berger and Funkey were each one of just 12 Big Ten student-athletes to be recognized as an All-American Scholar with 292 total honorees in men's division I. The duo was also honored by the Big Ten earlier in July as 2018-19 Distinguished Scholars.
The Nittany Lions as a team have a 3.26 cumulative GPA and saw 14 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors this past season. Berger, earns his third-straight AHCA All-American Scholar accolade after graduating with a 3.94 cumulative GPA. The finance major was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Funkey, who graduated with a 3.66 cumulative GPA earns his first AHCA recognition while also being a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
