Women's Golf Sits in 15th After Day 1 of Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – Following back-to-back rounds of 299, 11-over, the Penn State women's golf team currently sits in 15th after the opening two rounds of the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston.

Vanderbilt and Wake Forrest are currently tied for the lead at 16-under. The Commodores opened the tournament on fire with a 10-under first round of 278 before the Demon Deacons bested that score with the low-round of the day in the second round firing an 11-under, 277.

Florida and Florida State sit in third and fourth at 14-under and 2-under, respectively, while Arkansas and North Carolina are tied for fifth at 1-under.

Senior Megan McLean (Lebanon, N.J.) paced Penn State and is currently tied for 23rd following rounds of 2-over (74) and 2-under (70). McLean opened the day 5-over through her first nine holes of the tournament before firing 5-under over her final 27, including a bogey-free second round, to sit at even-par for the tournament.

"I struggled during the first round and I was pretty much grinding it out and focusing on hitting greens and getting the speed of the greens," mentioned McLean. "I eventually got back into my grove and started striking the ball very well which allowed me to have many birdie opportunities and I felt more confident as the day went on."

McLean totaled seven birdies on the day while the Nittany Lions carded 27 as a team.

In her first collegiate tournament, freshman Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) registered back-to-back rounds of 2-over, 74, and sits tied for 46th after the opening two rounds while sophomore Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) carded rounds of 2-over (74) and 7-over (79) and is in 76th position.

Junior Olivia Zambruno (Mt. Pleasant, Pa.) and senior Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) round out the team scoring at 10-over and 11-over, respectively, while redshirt freshman Taylor Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) fired rounds of 80 and 84 in her first collegiate tournament playing as an individual.
