UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's golf team departs for Durham, N.C., to play in the Rod Myers Invitational Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 14-15. The Nittany Lions, the 2018 RMI champions, are making their fifth-straight appearance at tournament held in honor of longtime Duke head men's golf coach Rod Myers.
The first of three events Penn State will play in the state of North Carolina this fall, the tournament will be held at the Duke University Golf Club, a par-72, 7,154-yard course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Rees Jones. The 13-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday with the Nittany Lions teeing off at 8:27 a.m. ET for the first round. Sunday's single round tee times will depend on each team's finish after day one.
"We return to the Duke Rod Myers Invitational with the excitement of what a new year brings," said Nittany Lion head men's golf coach Greg Nye, beginning his 28th year at Penn State. "This is a first-class event with another outstanding field. Coach Howe and I look forward to working with our two seniors and the many new faces in lineup this week, and on the team in general."
Seniors Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), regular starters for Penn State the last four years, begin their final campaign with this event. Juniors Lou Olsakovsky (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), Lukas Clark (Holland, Pa.) and James McHugh (Rye, N.Y.) get their first starting assignments in this weekend's lineup. Freshman Jimmy Meyers (Wexford, Pa.) makes his collegiate debut competing as an individual.
The Rod Myers Invitational honors the Blue Devil men's head coach who passed away in 2007 after a battle with an acute form of leukemia. The annual intercollegiate tournament has been held at Duke for 45 years and in 2010 was rebranded with Myers' name as a tribute.
Host institution Duke carries a No. 12 ranking into this weekend's event with No. 6 Wake Forest and No. 23 North Carolina also in the field. Charlotte, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Liberty, Louisville, Nebraska, Princeton, UNCG and Toledo round out the field with Penn State.
The Nittany Lions will practice at the Duke University Golf Club on Friday (Sept. 13) afternoon. A recap will be posted on GoPSUsports.com following the action on both days of competition.
