WTEN: Penn State Finishes Day One of Penn's Cissie Leary Invite and Auburn's Marliss Gruver Invite

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –The Penn State Women's Tennis team wrapped up day one of fall tournament play at the Cissie Leary and Marliss Gruver Invitational in Auburn, Ala. The tournaments will continue to run until the end of the weekend.

Cissie Leary Invitational

Singles

In singles competition, the Flight A bracket was highlighted by sophomores Sydney Weinberg and Olivia Ryan as well as senior Shannon Hanley, who all advanced through the round of 32. Weinberg defeated Temple sophomore Stefaniya Surikova in a 7-6 (2), 0-6, 10-3 showdown. Ryan claimed victory over Temple freshman Yining Tian, 6-2, 6-4. Hanley advanced with a first-round bye.

In the round of 16, Weinberg fell to Penn's Ashley Zhu, 6-2, 6-1. Ryan advanced to the quarterfinals in a back-and-forth 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory. Hanley handled business over Columbia junior Christie Wan with a 6-3, 6-1 win. 

Sophomore Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) were the lone Nitanny Lions in the Flight B singles bracket. In the round of 32, Hirsch was sharp in a 6-0, 6-3 win over Drexel sophomore Pauline Kharkover. Wikberg moved on to the round of 16 with a first-round bye.

The round of 16 saw Hirsch fall to one-seed Michelle Xu of Columbia in a 6-0, 6-0 match. Wikberg was defeated by Penn freshman Gibson Thomas, 7-6 (5), 6-0.
In the semifinals, Ryan will matchup with Columbia's Shivani Amineni while Hanley will look forward to a match with Penn's Iuliia Bryzgalova.

Weinberg will enter the Flight A Win-Lose draw against Delaware's Caragh Courtney. 

In the Flight B Win-Lose draw, Hirsch is set to compete against Temple's Ceclia Castelli. Wikberg will face Columbia's Paulina Ferrari. 

Doubles

Flight A doubles showcased Penn State's two pairings of Weinberg/Wikberg and Hanley/Ryan. Weinberg/Wikberg were defeated in the round of 16 by Drexel's duo of Ziouti/Richterová, 6-1. Hanley/Ryan fell to Temple's tandem of Surikova/Doroshenko in a 6-4 set.

In the consolation bracket, Weinberg/Wikberg lost to Penn's Zhu/Thomas by a score of 7-5. Hanley/Ryan were defeated by Fordham's Deminova/Aude, 6-3.

Marliss Gruver Invitational

Singles

The Marliss Gruver Invitational opened up with the singles draws. In the Flight B (Orange) round of 16, junior Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) was defeated by Yale sophomore Lauren Gillinov by a score of 7-6 (5), 6-0. Senior Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) was dropped by Auburn senior Taylor Russo by a score of 7-5, 6-1. Junior Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) was victorious over Ole Miss freshman Victoire De Samucewicz in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-0.

In the Flight B (Orange) quarterfinals, Svarre was defeated by Yale freshman Rhea Shrivastava, 7-5, 6-1.

During the Flight B (Red) bracket, Rohrbacher rebounded with a tight 6-3, 7-5 victory over Notre Dame sophomore Zoe Taylor. Smith also emerged victorious over Kansas State senior Ines Mesquita, 6-3, 6-3. Smith and Rohrbacher will both compete in the consolation semifinal, while Svarre will compete in the back draw against Yale's Lauren Gillinov.

The Flight A (Blue) round of 16 concluded with junior Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) losing to Auburn freshman Selin Ovunc, 6-2, 6-1.

In the Flight A (Red) quarterfinals, O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) lost a three-set decision to Yale freshman Vivian Cheng, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. O'Gorman will match up with Wisconsin sophomore Ava Markham in the back draw. 

Doubles

Day two of the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow as the duo of O'Gorman/Rohrbacher will battle Ole Miss's Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova while the pairing of Smith/Svarre will compete against Yale's tandem of Rhea Shrivastava and Raissa Lou.
