UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –The Penn State Women's Tennis team ended their run in Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational and continued play in Auburn's Marliss Gruver Invitational. Both tournaments will run through Sunday.
Cissie Leary Invitational
Singles
In Saturday's tournament play, sophomore Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) and senior Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) looked to continue their runs in the Flight A Singles bracket. Ryan was defeated in the quarterfinals in a three-set match with Columbia freshman Shivani Amineni, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Hanley's tournament run also came to an end in the quarterfinals, losing to Penn's Iuliia Bryzgalova, 6-2, 6-1.
The Flight A Win-Lose draw saw sophomore Sydney Weinberg (Winchester, Mass.) lose to Delaware's Caragh Courtney, 6-1, 2-6, 10-6.
In the Flight B Win-Lose draw, sophomore Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio) was eliminated by Temple's Cecilia Castelli, 6-4, 6-2.
Marliss Gruver Invitational
Singles
In the Flight A (Blue) bracket back draw, junior Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) was defeated by Wisconsin sophomore Ava Markham, 7-5, 6-2.
The Flight B (Orange) bracket featured senior Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and junior Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) in the consolation semifinals. Smith was defeated by Wisconsin's Melissa Pick, 6-2, 6-4. Rohrbacher lost at the hands of Ole Miss freshman Victoire De Samucewicz, 6-2, 6-4. In the back draw, junior Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) lost a tightly contested three-set match, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. The three Nittany Lions will continue competition on Sunday, with Svarre challenging Ole Miss senior Alexa Bortles for seventh place while Smith and Rohrbacher will face each other in the 11th place match.
Doubles
Penn State was represented by the duo of O'Gorman/Rohrbacher in the Flight A doubles bracket. The pair came up just short against the Ole Miss pairing of Vrbenska/Janatova in a 7-6 (6) loss. O'Gorman/Rohrbacher were later defeated by Notre Dame's tandem of Bojczuk/Taylor.
In the Flight B bracket, the Nittany Lions' Smith/Svarre pairing lost to Yale's duo of Shrivastava/Lou, 6-2 in the first round. Smith/Svarre were later matched up with Wisconsin's tandem of Pick/Zardoni and were defeated in a 6-3 set. Smith and Svarre will begin Sunday morning competing in the seventh place match against Wisconsin's pairing of Markham/Tudor.
