WTEN Finishes Hall of Fame Classic

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –The Penn State Women's Tennis team finished up their third fall tournament on Sunday as they wrapped up their weekend in Williamsburg, Va. for the Hall of Fame Classic. The Nittany Lions were matched up with Maryland in singles play and Liberty in doubles competition.
 
Singles
In singles against Maryland, junior Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) fell to freshman Ayana Akli in a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5) match. Sophomore Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) was triumphant over redshirt junior Amber Policare, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) claimed victory over sophomore Chloe Hamlin, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) defeated junior Zoe Kulkarni, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio) dropped a 7-5, 6-3 match to senior Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka. Sophomore Sydney Weinberg came up short in a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) loss to senior Saya Usui.
 
Doubles
In doubles versus Liberty, the Penn State duo of Svarre/Ryan won 8-6 over Ode Mitre/Nguyen. The Hanley/Wikberg tandem also emerged victorious over Almborg/Emery, 8-5. Hirsch/Weinberg lost their matchup against the pairing of Hashiguchi/Lovato, 8-2.

"The weekend was definitely a step up for us in the right direction," said coach Alex Anghelescu. "It's always a work in process and the girls are open to change which I appreciate and I know that it will only propel us to great things! We showed great resolve and resilience without the weekend, which excites Ronit and I for the rest of the fall and into the season."


Looking ahead, the Nittany Lions will continue fall tournament play next weekend as they travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational.
