Bard Leads Nittany Lions After First Round at Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Penn State men's golf senior Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) is tied for 10th with a 3-under 69 after the first round of competition at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. Bard came in 3-under on the front nine, which included an eagle on No. 4, and birdies on Nos. 7 and 8.
 
The Nittany Lions begin Saturday's round at 9:15 a.m. on the 10th hole at the Blackthorn Club at The Ridges.
 
Penn State finished Friday's round at 1-under 287 and sits in 10th place overall. No. 16 Tennessee leads the field at 273 (15-under) with No. 12 Louisville in second place at 274 (14-under). Benjamin Shipp of NC State fired a 65 (7-under) in the first round for the top spot overall.
 
Only two other players matched or bettered Bard's 33 (3-under) on the front nine and he maintained even par on the back nine.
 
Senior Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) came in with a 1-under 71 for a tie for 28th place and junior Lukas Clark (Holland, Pa.) checked in with a tie for 49th with a 1-over 73. Freshman Brady Pevarnik (Latrobe, Pa.) also made an eagle on the fourth hole and finished his first collegiate round with a 2-over 74 to tie for 54th.
 
Competing as an individual, freshman Ben Smith (Blain, Pa.) was even on his front nine and came in with a 77 (5-over) for a tie for 77th in his first collegiate round. Junior James McHugh (Rye, N.Y.) is tied for 84th with an 81 (9-over).
