WINTHROP, Mass. – Penn State women's hockey freshman Mallory Uihlein has been named the College Hockey America Rookie of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Uihlein was a pivotal player in the Nittany Lions' 1-0-1 series at Providence last Friday and Saturday. She was one of the Nittany Lions's best defensive players and picked up her second career assist in Saturday's 2-2 tie.
Uihlein blocked three shots and finished with a +1 rating for the weekend, but her impact was often found in helping the Nittany Lions break out of their own end and quickly transitioning play from defense to offense.
Her assist came on the power play in the first period when Brooke Madsen redirected her blast from the right point to give Penn State the early 1-0 advantage.
Uihlein becomes the second Nittany Lion to win a weekly conference award this season after Chantal Burke gathered Goaltender of the Week honors Oct. 14 after her two shutout performances against RPI.
She becomes the first Nittany Lion to win Rookie of the Week since Rene Gangarosa won it Feb. 4, 2019.
