Davenport Tops Penn State 49-17
The Penn State Men's Rugby team traveled to The Ohio State University this past weekend to take on Mid-South opponent, Davenport University.
It was a tough day on defense for the Lions who found themselves spending much of the first half defending without much reprieve. On occasion we were able to create a few opportunities for ourselves through some counterattacks only to be stopped short by an errand pass or a Davenport hand that stopped the attack. As frustration mounted for Penn State, Davenport were able to put in a few well worked tries through consistent pressure and a well-executed kicking game.
It was not until late into the second half the Penn State reserves (Finishers, as they have coined this year) were able to show some attacking power and score 3 tries late. A very young team started the match (5 Freshmen, 3 Sophomores, 3 Juniors and 4 Seniors) and showed that they have what it takes to perform at this level. With a little more time and experience at the D1A level those players are sure to have an even bigger impact on the team.
It is back to the practice field this week in preparation for another tough opponent in the US Naval Academy, Saturday, October 26th at 1:00 pm at the Brigade Sports Complex in Annapolis, MD.
