WTEN Begins Competition at ITA Regionals

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Penn State Women's Tennis team concluded day one of competition at the ITA Regionals hosted by Virginia Tech on Friday. The team saw action in the Atlantic Singles Qualification bracket and the ITA Atlantic Region Doubles bracket.
 
Singles
In the first round of the Atlantic Singles Qualification bracket, sophomore Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) was defeated by VCU junior Melissa Ifidzhen in three sets, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-0. Junior Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) dropped her opening matchup to William & Mary's Charlotte Madson, 6-3, 6-2.
Ryan won her consolation match following a withdrawal from Georgetown's Sofie Moenster. Wikberg withdrew from her consolation matchup against Temple's Stefaniya Surikova.
 
Doubles
In doubles play, junior Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N. S. Wales, Australia) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) advanced with a first-round bye. Olivia Ryan and junior Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) dropped their first-round matchup against West Virginia's tandem of Kat Lyman and Anne-Sophie Courteau.
O'Gorman and Rohrbacher will look forward to a matchup with Richmond's duo of Lea Owens and Dessi Zlateva on Saturday.
 
The Nittany Lions will continue competition in the ITA Regionals tomorrow.
