WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Penn State women's golf team finished the Land Fall Tradition 15th in the 18-team field with a 54-hole total score of 899 (35-over). The Nittany Lions shot a final round 13-over (301) on Sunday morning at the Country Club of Landfall's Dye Course.
"Conditions today were windy, but once play began the rain held off," mentioned head coach Denise St. Pierre. "I am extremely proud of Sarah and Mathilde's performance, they each put together solid final rounds."
No. 9 South Carolina used the round of the day to erase an 11-stroke deficit and earn the team championship in the 18th annual event. The Gamecocks shot 5-under (283) for the day leaping No. 13 Alabama after the Crimson Tide carded an 11-over (299) final round. USC finished the tournament 7-under (857) while the Tide came in at 2-under (862). No. 19 Illinois (5-over), No. 16 Oklahoma State (8-over) and No. 37 Florida State (9-over) rounded out the top-5.
The Nittany Lions finished ahead of a pair of Big Ten foes as No. 42 Maryland (43-over) and Purdue (51-over) finished 16th and 17th, respectively.
Sophomore Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) secured her second-straight top-10 finish to end the fall season with a solo tenth place finish at 1-under (215). Willis registered a final round even par, 72, with a pair of birdies and bogeys on her card. The sophomore was the third highest Big Ten finisher of the week falling just a single-stroke behind Michigan State's Paz Marfa while Indiana's Priscilla Schmid earned individual medalist honors with a 7-under, 209.
Freshman Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) recorded her lowest round of the week on Sunday firing a 1-over, 73, on the final day to finish the tournament tied for 45th at 7-over (223).
Junior Olivia Zambruno (Mt. Pleasant, Pa.) also had a nice day for Penn State recovering nicely from an early double-bogey to shoot a 2-over round of 74 finishing the tournament tied for 77th.
"Olivia had a great round today making some really nice up-and-downs and playing very steady after an early double-bogey," exclaimed St. Pierre.
Senior classmates Megan McLean (Lebanon, N.J.) and Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) each shot 10-over (82) on Sunday to round out the team scoring.
