Swimming & Diving to Take On Ohio State & Virginia Tech

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State swimming & diving will host their third meet of the 2019-20 season in McCoy Natatorium this weekend. Both teams will face off against Virginia Tech and Big Ten foe Ohio State starting Friday at 5 p.m. and continuing Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Nittany Lions will face their toughest challenge of the season. Penn State's men, who are effectively ranked 26th in the latest CSCAA/TYR Top 25 poll, will face an eighth-ranked Ohio State team and a 24th-ranked Virginia Tech squad. The Penn State women will also face a ranked team as Ohio State is ranked 24th.

This meet will be Penn State's "Military Appreciation" meet, and the team will wear camo suits in honor of Servicemembers.

The Series
The Penn State women's team is 12-2 against Ohio State all-time, with their first meet being held in 1984. The women's team had its' second loss against Ohio State in October during the 2018-19 season at Virginia Tech, 231-122. Against Virginia Tech, the women are 3-6 with their last meeting being in Blacksburg last season where they lost 190-163. The Penn State men's team is 4-19 against Ohio State in dual competition all-time, and 0-6 all-time against Virginia Tech. The men last faced off against Ohio State and Virginia Tech in October last season with a loss to both teams, 250-98 (Ohio State) and 155-98 (Virginia Tech).

The Penn State men have earned recognition early in the season earning 13 votes in the CSCAA TYR Top 25 poll and are ranked 20th according to CollegeSwimming.com.
Tallying 11 first-place finishes, the men's swimming & diving team dominated over West Virginia 167-125 at their last meet in McCoy Natatorium. Earning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors, Michael Daly led the team with a win in the 1000 Yard freestyle (9:13.05), 200 back (1:46.66) and the 500 free (4:32.94). Daniel Raisanen secured Big Ten Freshman of the Week by placing first in both the 200 breast (2:02.31) and the 100 breast (56.45).  Junior diver, Bryce Hoch qualified for NCAA zones with a score of 302.25 in the 1-meter dive. This score also secured him first place in the event.

The Penn State women, led by Carly Hart, Maddie Hart, and Christina Crowell, beat West Virginia on Oct. 12. Carly Hart led the women with two individual wins in the 100 and 200 breast (2:16.47) with a B-Cut time in the 100 breast (1:01.78), and a second-place finish in the 200 IM (2:04.67). Maddie Hart, Stephanie Szekely, Marie Schobel, and Abbie Amdor also finished the meet with a pair of wins each: Hart won the 100 (55.08) and 200 (2:02.86) fly while Schobel won the 100 (55.07) and 200 (1:58.67) back. Hart also placed second in the 200 (1:59.99) back. Szekely won the 1000 free (10:13.39) and 200 IM (2:04.63), and freshman Abbie Amdor continued to stand out with wins in the 100 free (50.42) for the second week in a row and the 200 free (1:50.28).

The Opponents
Ohio State began its season on Oct. 19, losing to Texas A&M 174-124 (women) and 153-147 (men). Last season, the Buckeye men went 7-3 and won third place at the Big Ten Championships. The women went 6-4 for the 2018-19 season and also placed third in the Big Ten Championships. Virginia Tech began its season with a 203-87 (men) and 208-87 (women) win against George Washington Saturday. Last season the Hokie men went 7-1 while the women went 5-4.
