MADISON, Wisc. – The Penn State women's hockey team lost its first game of the 2019-20 season in a 7-0 loss to #1/1 Wisconsin at LeBahn Arena Friday evening.
On the night Wisconsin raised its 2019 national championship banner, the Nittany Lions (0-1-2) were unable to break through the Badgers' tough defense and fell victim to an early Wisconsin (3-0-0) scoring surge in the first period.
Brette Pettet started the scoring for the Badgers at 5:34 in the first period followed by two more Badgers' scores at 14:25 by Maddie Posick and 16:45 on the power play by Pettet again.
The Badgers got one in the second at the 8:28 mark by Sophie Shirley to take a 4-0 advantage.
Wisconsin added three more scores 5:01 into the last period, two by Abby Roque and one by Daryl Watts.
Junior goaltender Chantal Burke made her second-career start and stopped a career-best 34 shots on goal.
Junior forward Shea Nelson and freshman defender Mallory Uihlein led the Nittany Lions with four shot attempts apiece. Sophomore defender Morgan Rolph had a team-best four blocked shots.
GAME NOTES
- Penn State had 19 blocked shots in the game, the most by the team since it had 25 against Boston University Dec. 30, 2018 in a 1-1 tie.
- Burke's 34 saves were the most by a Nittany Lion goaltender since Hannah Ehresmann had 35 saves Jan. 19, 2018 against Syracuse.
- Wisconsin went 2-for-4 on the power play and had a shorthanded goal. Penn State was 0-for-3 on its power-play chances.
- The Nittany Lions and Badgers will conclude their series tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 5. Game time is set for 8:07 ET, 7:07 CT.
