ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) and junior Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) have been named the Big Ten Conference Second and Third Stars of the week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning following their performances during a weekend sweep of the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
For both players this marks their first weekly honor of the season joining teammates Cole Hults (Stoughton, Wis.) and Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) who were recognized earlier in the year. This marks Sucese's fourth career weekly award and is the third for Barratt.
Sucese scored twice while adding a pair of assists for four points over the two-game series tying for second in the Big Ten and seventh in the nation for weekend scoring. Sucese maintains his Big Ten lead with 18 points through the first 11 games of the season on six goals and 12 assists.
On Saturday, Sucese broke a tie with Andrew Sturtz for the all-time Penn State goal scoring record, which briefly stood at 55 before he added his 56th career goal later in the game. The 56 goals are also tied for tops in the nation among active players while the senior's 120 career points are good for second all-time at Penn State as well as first among active Big Ten players and second nationally. Sucese is just eight points shy of David Goodwin's '17 program record of 128 points.
Barratt led the entire Big Ten and ranked tied for fourth in the nation with five points over the week, all assists, during the series sweep at Mariucci. Barratt tied his career-high with three helpers on Friday night, including the primary assist on Alex Limoges' (Winchester, Va.) eventual game-winner, before adding two more apples the following night. The junior now has a three-game point-streak in which he has registered multiple points in each game and his 12 points are tied for seventh in the Big Ten.
