LEXINGTON, Ky. –The Penn State women's tennis team ended day one of the Kentucky Invite on Friday. The tournament will continue running through the weekend, concluding on Sunday, Nov. 3.
Singles
In singles, the Nittany Lions were matched up with the Kentucky Wildcats. Junior Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) took down Kentucky's Maialen Morante in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) was defeated by Kentucky senior Diana Tkachenko, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) dropped a 6-4, 6-4 match against Kentucky freshman Carlota Molina Megias. Junior Frederikke Svarre lost a tightly contested 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) matchup against Kentucky senior Ana Tkachenko. Sophomore Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kentucky junior Brianna Tulloch. In an additional singles match, sophomore Sydney Weinberg (Winchester, Mass.) was defeated by West Virginia sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia, 6-0, 6-4.
Doubles
In doubles, the Nittany Lions had a matchup against the Virginia Tech Hockies. Penn State's duo of O'Gorman/Svarre handled Virginia Tech's tandem of Sorkin/Pinto, 8-5. Smith/Weinberg were defeated in their matchup against Kozar/Danailova, 8-1. Rohrbacher/Hirsch earned a 8-4 victory against the Hockies' pairing of Hackbirth/Butterworth.
The tournament will resume tomorrow as the Nittany Lions open up with a doubles matchup against Utah. Following the doubles matches, Penn State will play DePaul in singles with an additional singles match against Virginia Tech.
