UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; November 5, 2019 – The Penn State Nittany Lion field hockey team garnered Big Ten Field Hockey weekly honors in the regular season's final week. Junior Abby Myers (Hartland, Wis.) was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. Redshirt freshman Brie Barraco (Allentown, Pa.) was named Big Ten Rookie of the Week.
Myers led Penn State to a 2-0 week, including a key Big Ten win over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. Myers connected on her only shot in Penn State's 3-0 road win at Bucknell on Wednesday. She then led Penn State to a 2-1 Big Ten victory on Senior Day over visiting Rutgers. Myers had a first half goal and then a diving pass to teammate Jemma Punch on the game-winning goal late in the fourth period. Myers tallied five points off two goals and an assist on the week. She now has 10 points on the year off three goals and four assists.
Barraco recorded her first career shutout in Penn State's 3-0 victory at Bucknell on Wednesday night. She then turned around to bolster a PSU defense in the Nittany Lions' 2-1 Big Ten victory over Rutgers on Sunday on Senior Day at Penn State. Barraco had five saves in the win against the Knights and withstood a nine shot second half from Rutgers.
The Nittany Lions, under the guidance of head coach Char Morett-Curtiss, are now 6-11 overall, 4-4 in the Big Ten. Rutgers falls to 10-7, 4-4 in the Big Ten. Penn State will host the 2019 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament next week at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. The tournament begins with three games on Thursday (11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m.), the semifinals on Friday (4 p.m., 6:30 p.m.) and the championship game on Sunday (2 p.m.). Friday and Sunday's games air on the BTN (with the 6:30 semifinal airing on tape delay later that evening). Thursday's game stream live on BTN+.
