KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Three Penn State women's soccer student-athletes earned first-team Scholar All-Region honors announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Monday, December 16. Senior Kaleigh Riehl and juniors Kerry Abello and Sam Coffey were recognized for their outstanding work in the classroom.
Senior Kaleigh Riehl earned first team Scholar All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches in 2018 alongside Emily Ogle who also earned first team honors. Riehl, a kinesiology major, holds a 3.91 cumulative GPA and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team earlier this year. Along with earning her second Scholar All-Region honor, Riehl has been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America second team, All-North Region first team, All-Big Ten first team and CoSIDA Academic All-District in 2019. Riehl ended her career as the NCAA all-time leader in minutes played and ranks third all-time in Penn State history in starts and appearances (101).
Junior Kerry Abello collects her third academic award of the 2019 year. Abello was recently named a CoSIDA first team Academic All-America, the second Academic All-America honor from CoSIDA in her Penn State career. Abello carries a 4.0 GPA while double majoring in science and Spanish. Abello finished the season third on the team with eight goals and added three assists. Abello brought home her second All-Region honor of her Penn State career as she was named to the All-North Region second team. She also was named a first team All-Big Ten selection earlier this year.
Junior Sam Coffey earns the first Scholar All-Region honor of her career from the United Soccer Coaches. Coffey has earned a 3.86 GPA and while majoring in journalism. Earlier this fall, Coffey earned first team All-Region honors and first team All-Big Ten honors in her first season in Happy Valley. Coffey scored 11 goals, added 10 assists and finished with 32 points on the season, good for second on the team in each category.
Scholar All-America teams will be released on Wednesday, December 18.
