Riehl and Coffey Named Scholar All-America

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A pair of Penn State women's soccer players have been named to Scholar All-America teams announced by the United Soccer Coaches Wednesday, December 18. Senior Kaleigh Riehl was named first team Scholar All-America for the second consecutive season and junior Sam Coffey earned second team honors for the first time in her career. In program history, the Nittany Lions have earned 22 Scholar All-American honors, including 15 first team accolades.

Riehl earns her second Scholar All-America first team honor of her storied career. In 2018, Riehl also earned Scholar All-America first team plaudits. Riehl is one of just three student-athletes among the 2019 honors to earn multiple Scholar All-America honors. Riehl carries a 3.91 GPA in kinesiology and also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors earlier this year. Riehl has twice been named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and named Academic All-Big Ten three times. Her 2019 accolades include: United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America first team, TopDrawerSoccer Best XI first team, United Soccer Coaches All-America second team, All-North Region first team, All-Big Ten first team and CoSIDA Academic All-District.

Junior Sam Coffey earns the first Scholar All-America honor of her career in her first year as a Nittany Lion Coffey earned a 3.86 GPA and while majoring in journalism. Earlier this fall, Coffey earned first team All-Region honors and collected first team All-Big Ten honors. Coffey scored 11 goals, added 10 assists and finished with 32 points on the season, good for second on the team in each category.

This is the third Academic All-America Award Penn State women's soccer has earned in 2019. Junior Kerry Abello earned CoSIDA Academic All-America first team honors earlier this month.
