MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Penn State women's tennis team received their first loss of the season against Kansas State on Monday afternoon by a score of 5-0.
The Nittany Lions move to 1-1 following Monday's result.
"Today wasn't our day, we had a few challenges that we needed to grind through but we fell short," said coach Alex Anghelescu. "We will use this as a learning opportunity and fuel to motivate us for the rest of the season. Overall, I'm happy with how the season started but we are not done working and there is still much tennis ahead this season!"
Doubles
Kansas State won the doubles point with a 3-0 sweep of Penn State.
Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) lost a tight set against Anna Turco and Margot Decker, 6-4.
Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) ended their set down 5-3 against Maria Linares and Ioana Gheorghita.
Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) were narrowly defeated by Ines Mesquita and Karine-Marion Job by a score of 6-4.
Singles
O'Gorman was defeated by Linares, 6-4, 6-3.
Svarre dropped her matchup against Turco, 6-3, 6-3.
Rohrbacher came up short against Decker, 6-0, 6-2.
Ryan lost her matchup against Rosanna Maffei in a 6-2, 6-0 match.
Hanley trailed Mesquita 6-4, 3-0 before the match was called.
Smith was in the midst of a 3-6, 2-3 match against Gheorghita that ended unfinished.

The Nittany Lions will have a chance to recuperate with their next match coming Friday, Jan. 31 against Marshall in Penn State's home opener.
