UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –The Penn State women's tennis team is back in the win column after victory over Marshall in its home opener on Friday evening.
The Nittany Lions improve to 2-1 after Friday's decision.
"I think we did a really good job of coming out and fighting. Marshall did a good job of coming out after losing the doubles point and pushed us," said coach Alex Anghelescu. "I think we grew in a lot of areas. Not just in tennis, but also with our confidence and our belief. I think the girls are starting to string it together and it's exciting for me to see."
Doubles
Penn State took the doubles point with wins in the one and two slots.
Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) emerged victorious in a 6-3 set against Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych.
Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) won against Madi Ballow and Liz Stefancic, 6-3.
Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) left their match unfinished in a 5-6 set.
Singles
O'Gorman earned a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory in a three-set match over Anna Smith.
Svarre delivered a clutch performance defeating Dankanych, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7).
Ryan dropped her matchup against Van Hansewyck, 3-6, 4-6.
Samantha Smith cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Stefancic.
Hanley was defeated by Ballow, 4-6, 6-7 (4).
Hirsch came up short in a 3-6, 0-6 match against Riley.
