Women’s Rugby Travels to D.C. for Spring Opener

The Penn State women's rugby team will open its spring campaign with a Round Robin tournament this weekend in Washington, D.C. The squad will face off against three different teams, including Life University, a team that they faced off against once already this year.

Saturday's games are going to come against two senior women's club teams - Capital Selects and USA South. The first game, kicking off at 12:30pm, is going against Capital Selects - a club team based out of D.C. comprised of the best women's rugby players from the Mid-Atlantic region.

That match will be followed up by the clash with USA South, a similar club based out of Atlanta, GA. These matches should provide a good opportunity for Penn State to get experience playing against some of the more-polished rugby veterans. The USA South game is scheduled to get underway at 4pm, and both games will be played at Barry Farm Recreation Center, located just over the Douglass bridge in downtown D.C.

On Sunday morning, the blue and white will have their lone collegiate competition when they face off against Life University. This will be a rematch from earlier, this season, when life was able to come away with a 44-12 victory on September 28. That game will kickoff at 10:30am from Cardinal Stadium, the home of the Catholic University football team.

After the Life match, the team is going to be treated to some high-quality rugby as the Major League Rugby club Old Glory DC host the Seattle Seawolves in their inaugural season's home opener, also to be played at Cardinal Stadium. Old Glory DC join Rugby ATL and the New England Free Jacks as the third expansion club beginning play this season, bringing the league total to 12 teams.

This weekend should prove as a way to get back into the competitive groove and hopefully set the tone for a successful spring campaign, which will include traveling to Moraga, CA for the D1 Elite Semifinals in early April.
