BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Penn State's Michael Daly set a new school record in the 200 freestyle to open the Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at Indiana's Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center on Wednesday evening. As a team, the Nittany Lions are in fifth place with 96 points.
Daly's 200 free time of 1:34.73 came as a lead-off split for the 800 freestyle relay, breaking John Hauser's previous record of 1:34.88.
The first day of Big Tens consisted of two relay events. To start off the evening, Liam Veregin, Brad Johnson, Juliusz Gosieniecki and Gabe Castano competed in the 200 medley relay and placed fifth with a time of 1:25.35, which ranks as the third-fastest time in school history.
Daly led the 800 free effort to a seventh-place finish in 6:24.00, ranking the swim as the second-fastest 800 free relay in Penn State history. Daly was joined in the effort by Hayden Harlow, Eben Krigger, and Zachary Zwijacz.
