Men's S&D Ends Day Two with Four Podium Finishes

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –  Junior Gabe Castano won silver in the 50 free and takes over the No. 2 spot on the Penn State all-time list. He is now .03 seconds from breaking the school record held by olympic swimmer Shane Ryan. 

The Nittany Lions currently stand in sixth-place with 237 points going into day three of competition.


Top Swims

Castano led the team with a second-place finish in the 50 free after swimming a personal-best and NCAA B-Cut time of 19.06. He is now ranked fourth in the nation for the event, and beats his No. 2 spot on the Penn State all-time list. 

Two Nittany Lions secured a fifth-place finish with personal-bests and NCAA B-cut times in their respective events. Sophomore Michael Daly landed a podium spot in the 500 free with a final time of 4:17.36. He takes over the No. 2 spot on the Penn State all-time list and becomes the fastest Nittany Lion to compete in that event at the Big Ten Championships. Junior Will Roberson finished with a time of 19.40 in the 50 free - beating his previously held No. 3 spot on the all-time list. 

Junior Hayden Harlow had an 11th place finish in the 200 IM with a career-best and NCAA B-cut time of 1:44.64 - beating his own No. 2 time on the all-time list. He is now .02 seconds away from breaking the school record held by Scott Marino in a 2011 swim. Teammate Sam Rennard also swam a career-best in his first Big Tens in the 500 free prelims with a time of 4:23.25. He now ranks No. 7 on the Penn State all-time list. 


Top Dives

The divers competed in the 1-meter prelims and were led by freshman Kevin Sullivan with a score of 237.85. 


Nittany Lion Relays

The Penn State team composed of Liam Veregin, Brad Johnson, Zac Zwijacz, and Castano swam for an eighth-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:09.61).

On day one, Veregin, B. Johnson, Juliusz Gosieniecki and Castano placed fifth in the 200 medley relay (1:25.35) earning them the third-fastest time in school history.

The men will continue competition on Friday with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. All sessions will be streamed live via BTN Plus on BTN2Go. Complimentary access to BTN2Go is available to viewers connected to the internet network of a Big Ten university.
