Six All-Time Swims and a Broken School Record Highlight Day 3 of Big Tens

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore Michael Daly placed fourth in the 400 IM and Penn State's 200 free relay team set a school record to lead the Nittany Lions on the third day of the Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Friday at Indiana's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

The 200 freestyle team made up of Gabe Castano, Will Roberson, Austin Wilson and Juliusz Gosieniecki broke a school record with an NCAA provisional time of 1:17.38. The previous record of 1:17.83 had stood since 2009.

Penn State finished day three of competition with six times ranking on the school's all-time top-10 performers list. As a team, the Nittany Lions are currently eighth with 379 points going into the last day of Big Tens. 


Top Swims

Sophomore Michael Daly ended Friday with his second top-eight finish of the meet after swimming an NCAA B-cut time of 3:43.00 in the 400 IM to place fourth. Teammate William Lulek finished 11th with a personal-best and NCAA B-cut time of 3:46.73. Teddy Perelli also ended with a personal-best time of 3:53.80 in the 400 IM.

Senior Liam Veregin swam for a final time of 47.70 to finish 14th in the 100 back. Roberson and Wilson also put up personal-bests in the 100 back prelims, earning them a place in the bonus finals. Roberson's prelim time of 48.12 secured him a No. 9 spot on the Penn State all-time list. Wilson lands right behind him at No. 10 with his prelim time of 48.15.

Both Zac Zwijacz and Juliusz Gosieniecki qualified for the bonus finals of the 100 fly with personal bests. Zwijacz's prelim time of 47.46 ranks him No. 4 on the Penn State all-time list., while Gosieniecki's prelim time put him on the all-time list in a tie for fifth place (47.55). 

Two Nittany Lions swam career-best and NCAA B-cut times in the 100 breast. Brad Johnson's final time of 53.19 won the bonus final (17th) and moved him to the No. 3 spot on the Penn State all-time list. Daniel Raisanen now ranks in eighth place on the list with a final time of 53.95 (20th).

Yesterday junior Gabe Castano finished second in the 50 free to beat his time of the No. 2 Penn State all-time top-10 performers list. He is currently .03 seconds away from breaking the school record held by Olympic swimmer, Shane Ryan. 

Both Daly and Roberson ended the day with a fifth-place finish after swimming personal-bests and NCAA B-cut times. Daly's time of 4:17.36 in the 500 free ranks him No. 2 on the Penn State all-time list and he becomes the fastest Nittany Lion to swim that event at Big tens. Roberson beat his time on the Penn State all-time list and reamins at third in the 50 free with a time of 19.40.

Top Dives

The divers competed in the 3-meter prelims and were led by junior Bryce Hoch with a score of 252.25.

The men will finish up competition on Saturday with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. All sessions will be streamed live via BTN Plus on BTN2Go. Complimentary access to BTN2Go is available to viewers connected to the internet network of a Big Ten university.
