UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's gymnastics team garnered multiple awards Tuesday after improving to 9-0 with a 399.600-375.850 win at Air Force on Saturday. Stephen Nedoroscik racked up honors, earning National Gymnast of the Week and National Specialist of the Week recognition from the College Gymnastics Association and Big Ten Gymnast of the Week from the Big Ten. Additionally, Robbie Shamp was named the Big Ten Rookie of the Week.
Nedoroscik won on pommel horse with a score of 15.9, posting the best score in the nation in over five years. It was a personal-best score for the two-time national champion, eclipsing his previous best of 15.5 that he set at the West Point Open earlier this season. He has the highest pommel horse routine in the nation this season by more than a point and the best average score by more than a point.
Shamp received his first Big Ten Rookie of the Week honor after winning a pair of events in the meet at Air Force. He took first on floor with a personal-best score of 14.1, which is the best by a Penn State gymnast this season. He added a win on vault, scoring 14.05. Shamp added a sixth-place finish on high bar.
Penn State, which is ranked eighth in the nation, is off this weekend and will return to action with a non-conference home meet against William & Mary on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m.
