UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's tennis team was defeated by James Madison in Saturday morning's match.
The Nittany Lions drop to 2-2 on the season.
"I felt like the girls fought really hard in singles," said coach Alex Anghelescu. "Two years ago we lost to this team 7-0, and with Shannon still on the court it could have been a much closer match today. So it just proves to the girls that the work that we're putting in and the process is working."
Doubles
James Madison earned the doubles point with two doubles wins.
Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) came up short in a 2-6 set versus Daniela Voloh and Natalia Nikolopoulou.
Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) had strong showing defeating Jona Roka and Daria Afanasyeva, 6-1.
Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) dropped their set against Amanda Nord and Kylie Moulin, 1-6.
Singles
O'Gorman claimed victory in a 6-2, 6-4 win over Roka.
Svarre dropped a 3-set match against Afanasyeva, 6-0, 2-6, 4-6.
Smith was victorious in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 match against Voloh.
Ryan came up short in her matchup with Moulin, 0-6, 2-6.
Hirsch lost her match against Nikolopoulou, 4-6, 2-6.
Hanley's match against Nord went unfinished with Hanley leading 6-4, 3-3.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Virginia next weekend for a match against Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday and a match against Virginia Tech on Sunday.
