BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Penn State women's tennis team was defeated by Indiana in Bloomington on Sunday morning.
The Nittany Lions fall to 3-4 after Sunday's outing.
"It was a very tough loss for us, but there is a lot to learn from it," said coach Alex Anghelescu. "Our girls fought hard and the match was only a difference of a couple key points. This is our first Big Ten match and there is a lot more tennis to be play."
Doubles
Penn State lost the doubles point as Indiana claimed two close doubles wins.
Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) left their set unfinished in a 6-6 (3-4) match against Annabelle Andrinopou and Jelly Bozovic.
Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) were defeated by Caitlin Bernard and Alexandra Staiculesc, 5-7.
Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) were narrowly defeated by Michelle McKamey and Lexi Kubas, 6(2)-7.
Singles
O'Gorman lost against Bernard, 1-6, 4-6.
Svarre earned a 6-0, 4-1 victory as Andrinopou retired in the second set.
Smith was defeated by Staiculesc, 3-6, 3-6.
Rohrbacher came up short against Bozovic, 5-7, 4-6.
Hanley was leading 7-6, 3-0 against McKamey before the match was left unfinished.
Ryan was in the middle of a 6(2)-7, 5-1 match against Mejic that was left unfinished.

The Nittany Lions will play three matches in Georgia this coming week, visiting Emory on Thursday, Kennesaw State on Saturday, and Georgia Gwinnett College on Sunday.
