OXFORD, Ohio – Penn State freshman Johnny Piacentino (Cherry Hill, N.J.) homered, but it was not enough as Miami (Ohio) defeated Penn State, 5-1, in non-conference baseball action Thursday at McKie Field.
The Big Ten Conference announcement regarding the cancelation of the remainder of the 2019-20 seasons was released early in the game, but the game continued and student-athletes were informed of the decision at the game's conclusion. The Nittany Lions conclude the season with a 10-5 record.
All three Penn State seniors – Gavin Homer (Battle Creek, Mich), Mason Nadeau (Lansdale, Pa.) and Jacob Padilla (Wylie, Texas) – played in the game.
The first five innings were scoreless, but Piacentino homered to lead-off the sixth inning for a Penn State lead. However, Landon Stevens hit a three-run home run in the bottom half for a 3-1 RedHawks advantage, and Miami pushed across a run each in the seventh and eighth innings for the final margin.
Piacentino went 2-for-4 for the game to lead the offense, while classmate Matt Wood (Gibsonia, Pa.) went 2-for-3.
RHP Bailey Dees (Charlotte, N.C.) (1-2) started for Penn State and pitched into the sixth inning, striking out five.
