WTEN Splits Double Header

KENNESAW, Ga. –The Penn State women's tennis team split a double header Saturday afternoon, defeating Kennesaw State and falling to North Florida.
 
The Nittany Lions move to 5-5 on the season.
 
Kennesaw State
Doubles
Penn State claimed the doubles point with wins in the one and three slots.
 
Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) came up clutch in a 7-6(2) victory against Taylor Dean and Paola Cortez.
 
Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) ended their match unfinished locked at 6-6 against Aspen Jarrett and Tina Vlajic.
 
Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio) cruised to victory against Elle Baker and Brenna Reilly, 6-1.
 
Singles
Svarre defeated Dean in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(2).
 
O'Gorman came out on top against Cortez, 6-4, 6-1.
 
Smith won against Vlajic, 6-3, 6-3.
 
Hanley delivered a strong showing with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Juliana Castellanos.
 
Ryan fell to Sofia Pinedo, 4-6, 2-6. 
 
Hirsch came up short against Jarrett, 2-6, 2-6.
 
North Florida
Doubles
Penn State lost the doubles point with a win in one of three matches.
 
Smith and Hanley delivered a 6-4 victory against Ana Paula Melilo and Lucia Montano.
 
Svarre and Ryan were defeated by Costanza Gorches and Kendall Nash, 3-6.
 
Sydney Weinberg (Winchester, Mass.) and Hirsch were defeated in a 5-7 match against Sean Lodzki and Valentina Mariotto.
 
Singles
Svarre fell to Montano, 3-6, 2-6.
 
O'Gorman won her match against Melilo, 6-4, 6-4.
 
Smith was in the midst of a 6(5)-7, 0-2 match against Gorches that was left unfinished.
 
Hanley's matchup with Mariotto was left unfinished at 5-7, 0-2.
 
Hirsch lost to Nash, 3-6, 4-6.

Weinberg was defeated by Lodzki, 5-7, 2-6 in her first singles action of the season.
 
Up Next
The Nittany Lions will return home on Friday for a Big Ten match against the Michigan Wolverines. The team will also face off against Michigan State at home on Sunday.
