UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The 2019-20 Penn State women's volleyball team earned the program's first American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, as announced by the AVCA on Monday.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
The award factors in the GPA of all players that played at least one set during the 2019 season. The Lions averaged a 3.30 GPA during the fall and spring semesters combined.
Penn State's academic success came during yet another run to the NCAA Tournament, the 39th-consecutive year the Lions competed in the event. They finished 27-6 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Final.
In addition to the academic honor, Penn State received additional recognition for reaching their fundraising goal for the Dig Pink event. That was one of two large fundraising efforts for the Lions this past season. Recent graduate Emily Sciorra was one of four Penn State student-athletes to participate in THON.
