With the fall semester nearing its midway point we were able to check in with some of our student-athletes to see how they have been adjusting since returning to campus. We first got to speak with graduate student Megan McLean from Lebanon, New Jersey. Megan took advantage of the extra year of eligibility given by the NCAA to spring student-athletes following the cancellation of the remainder of spring events and championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Q. What was your favorite moment from the summer?
This summer, my family and I took a trip down to Hilton Head, South Carolina. We stayed in the Sea Pines Resort on the Island. I think my favorite moment from the summer was when I was able to play Harbour Town Golf Links. We played the course shortly after the PGA RBC Heritage tournament, so it was in peak condition. I have always watched that tournament on TV, so it was a ton of fun to see the course in person.
Q. What was it like returning to campus for the first time this fall and what was the first thing you did?
I felt so happy to be back. I was excited to get back into my normal routine. The first thing that I did being back at Penn State was go to the golf course to reconnect with my team. Then, later grabbed lunch at my favorite PSU restaurant, Snap Pizza.
Q. What is your favorite spot at Penn State and why?
My favorite spot at Penn State is Beaver Stadium. I loved tailgating and going to the football games. It was one of my favorite fall activities. After qualifying in the morning every Saturday, we would rush home to try and make it to the game. A Penn State football game is truly something special. I am looking forward to the next white out game!
Q. What type of activities have you been doing as a team since returning to campus?
Since returning to campus, we have been getting together every weekend to hang out, watch movies, and play games. I think next on our list is to visit this local haunted house attraction for Halloween.
Q. How are you adjusting to hybrid learning? How many in person classes do you have and how are they different from previous years?
I am very fortunate to be able to go to class. None of my classes are online because I am a graduate student. Although the classrooms look a little different because we all must sit six feet apart and wear masks, I am grateful we have in-person learning. The overall learning experience is still very good.
Q. What is the most interesting class you are taking this semester and why?
The most interesting class that I am taking this semester is managerial accounting. My professor is the reason why this class is interesting! He is enthusiastic and very passionate. He truly wants to see his students do well.
Q. With no official competition this fall what has your approach been and what are you looking to focus most on?
With no official competition this fall, I have taken the opportunity to train and get better. After analyzing my last season, I noticed that one of the weakest parts of my game is putting. So, I have been spending a lot of extra time working on my stroke. I want to be the best I can be for next season, so we can have a very successful spring season.
Q. What is your most improved part of your game since arriving at Penn State?
The most improved part of my game is short game/putting. I think one of the most important parts of the game is this area. You can be a great ball striker but if you do not make the putt, it means nothing. So, I have been really grinding on the putting green to improve this part of my game for the season.
Q. What is one golf course on your bucket list that you absolutely must play at some point in your life?
One golf course that I must play at some point in my life is Augusta National. I have always enjoyed watching the Masters growing up. Augusta National is one of the most famous and exclusive clubs in the world, so to be able to have the chance to play that golf course would be incredible.
Q. What was it about golf that interested you and when did you begin playing?
I have always grown up playing many different sports, but I always enjoyed golf more. I started competitive golf when I was eight years old, but I have always been around the game. In fact, there are pictures of me in a stroller as an infant holding a golf club. My father was the one that introduced me to the game. This was a great activity for my Dad and I to play together and it was fun to win all of the Father's Day tournaments!
