ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conferences announced plans for the 2020 ACC/Big Ten Challenge with Penn State men's basketball traveling to Virginia Tech for a Tuesday, Dec. 8 contest. The game will be broadcast by the ESPN family of networks. A tip time will be announced at a later date.
Penn State and Virginia Tech have met three times previously in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with this year's game the first to be played in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Nittany Lions have won five of their last six ACC/Big Ten Challenge games and own a 3-0 mark against Virginia Tech in Challenge games. Penn State topped the No. 13 Hokies 63-62 in 2018.
Television coverage of all 14 ACC/Big Ten Challenge games will be shared by ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU as the teams play for ownership of the Commissioner's Cup.
Virginia Tech finished the season with a 16-16 overall record and 7-3 mark in conference play while Penn State was 21-10 in 2019-20 with an 11-9 record in Big Ten action. In the all-time series, the Hokies have a 6-3 advantage, but the last two games have been won by PSU.
The Big Ten Conference won the 2019 Challenge with an 8-6 record after the two leagues tied 7-7 in 2018. The Nittany Lions have played in 19 of the 21 Big Ten/ACC Challenge games with a 10-9 record. Penn State did not participate in back-to-back seasons in 2003 and 2004.
