UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania – Penn State women's hockey junior defender Jessica Adolfsson was named CHA Player of the Week and freshman Carrie Byrnes garnered CHA Rookie of the Week honors for their individual play last weekend in two Nittany Lions wins at Robert Morris.
Adolfsson (Linkoping, Sweden) wins her first CHA Player of the Week award for her career after scoring twice in last Saturday's 4-1 win. Both of her goals came in the second period and it marked the first multi-goal game in her career.
Adolfsson is currently tied for the conference lead in points among defender with four (1G, 3A).
Byrnes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) also wins her first CHA award after tallying three assists in the two-game set at RMU. She dished out two assists in Friday's 3-2 win, including a great assist to Julie Gough on the eventual game-winning score. She added another on Penn State's first goal on Saturday.
Byrnes sits tied for second in the league among freshmen with five points (2G, 3A).
Adolfsson becomes Penn State's first CHA Player of the Week recipient this season and Byrnes follows Kiara Zanon as the second Rookie of the Week participant for the Nittany Lions.
The Nittany Lions received a national ranking in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Division I women's hockey polls for the first time in program history, sporting a number-10 ranking in both polls.
Penn State sits in first place in College Hockey America with 13 points, five points ahead of second-place Robert Morris.
PSU heads to RIT this coming weekend, Jan. 16-17, for a pair of road contests against the Tigers. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m. and Saturday puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
